EVERSON
Everson is a small friendly community located in the Nooksack Valley
on State Route 544, and extending to Nugent's Corner and Deming, ten
miles east along highway 542.
The town itself serves the surrounding farm families who raise dairy
cattle, carrots, raspberries, blueberries, potatoes, peas, and other
produce. Some travelers bound for Sumas and the border travel through
Everson and Nooksack as an alternate scenic route.
There are restaurants and all the basic services. Stop- to play at
City Park (1/2 block off the W. Main St.) or meander down to Riverside
Park on the banks of the Nooksack River (picnic grounds and ball fields
available). This is the key site for the bike-to-canoe hand-off for
the Whatcom County's famous 85-mile SKI TO SEA relay race.
NOOKSACK
Nine miles south of the Canadian Border on Highway 9 lies the quiet
little town of Nooksack. Once a thriving town with regular train service,
a series of fires throughout the early 1900's stifled the town's growth.
Famous Northwest photographer Darius Kinsey and his wife Tabitha,
are buried here. Kinsey is well known for his documentary photographs
of early logging, fishing and railroad operations and social commentaries,
a collection that is now held in the Whatcom Museum. (Selected photographs
have been published in a book.) Today small businesses along Nooksack
Ave include mini-marts, a Reisner Distributor, Inc. fueling
station, mini-storage, a drive-in restaurant, farm/garden supply, auto body, bakery, and a post
office. At the City Park playground equipment and picnic tables are available. Rural bed & breakfasts are scattered
across the countryside and travelers can also stay on working dairy
farms.
